Regrouting & Resealing in Hornchurch

Regrouting and resealing in Hornchurch. Tired grout cut out and renewed, sealant replaced, limescale and mould dealt with. The bathroom back without a retile.

What's involved

Regrouting & Resealing in Hornchurch: the details

01

Grout cut out to depth

Raked back far enough for new grout to grip, then refilled and struck off flush. Grout spread over the top of the old simply flakes out again.

02

Sealant replaced, not topped up

Every trace of the old silicone cut and cleaned away, and the joint left to dry before a new bead goes in. Fresh silicone laid over old never sticks.

03

Limescale and mould

Hornchurch water is hard, and the scale that builds along grout lines holds moisture and feeds mould. Both are cleaned back before anything new goes on.

04

Bigger bathrooms, same day

The larger 1930s bathrooms here have more grout to do, so it takes longer, but it is still usually a day rather than the week a retile would take.

05

Whole room, one colour

All the grout in the room renewed together, so there is no visible difference between old and new areas.

A tired Hornchurch bathroom is usually a sound bathroom with tired grout. On tiling this size regrouting brings the whole room back for a fraction of what retiling costs, and it takes a day rather than a week.

In the bigger Emerson Park bathrooms a regrout often covers far more than the shower: walls tiled floor to ceiling, a separate bath and sometimes a tiled floor. Doing it all at once keeps the grout colour even across the room, instead of one bright new shower wall beside grout that has had years to darken.

Good to know

Regrouting & Resealing: the usual questions

Can the new grout go over the old?

No. Grout needs depth to hold, and a thin layer spread over old grout cracks and falls out within months. Doing it that way saves the tiler an hour and costs you the job.

The bathroom is large. Will regrouting be enough?

Usually yes, and on a bigger Hornchurch bathroom it saves the most, because retiling a room that size is a serious job. If more than a few tiles sound hollow we will tell you regrouting is papering over it.

Why do my grout lines go white and crusty?

That is limescale from the hard water in this part of Havering. Left alone it traps moisture in the grout and black mould follows. Regrouting clears it, and wiping the tiles down after a shower stops it coming back.

Can I just regrout the shower and leave the rest?

You can, but new grout next to old usually shows. If the rest of the room is in fair condition a deep clean may bring it close; if not, doing the whole room gives an even finish.

Can the grout be changed to a different colour?

Yes, when it is fully raked out and replaced. A grey or darker grout hides everyday marks better than white, which is why many people change colour at a regrout.
